Off the beaten track  close to Bloemfontein, you will find Soutpan. A small salt mining village in the middle of the Free State—Between Bloemfontein and Bultfontein on the  R700.

Salt has been mined here since 1908 and during the flood in 1988 a lot of the salt miners lost their income.  The main  income in this area comes from farming. This includes planting grains ie sunflowers, corn and wheat.  We are 8km from Florisbad a fossil-bearing spring mound, it is widely known for producing an archaic modern human skull, now dated to c. 260 000 years old. Other interesting sites close by - Soetdoring Nature Reserve (17 km) ,Bloemfontein (45km). Salt mining, hunting, Milky way (the best) ,Paint Ball, Swimming. Salt mining tours.
